I ordered five books online, read two of them and am already into the third, the island.

The first book I read was little brother by Cory Doctorow. It's a book aimed at young adults who are part of the internet culture. Bunch of hacker kids witness a terrorist attack and get interrogated by the gov't. Upon release they notice a sharp increase in surveillance - which was already high - and decide to fight back. It's not particularly well written but the key concept of privacy in the age of computers is solid.

The second book was the chrysalids by John Wyndham. I bought this because Jefferson airplane used a few lines of it in the lyrics to crown of creation. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world - although it's never made explicitly clear, there are hints at a nuclear war. The book follows the story of a young boy and his friends who have a mental mutation. This isn't good for them because they live in a society based on a form of Christianity where all deviations from the true form are seen as blasphemies against God.

I'm currently reading island by Aldous Huxley. I was going to get of apes and essence, but this book seemed to get better reviews. The book is supposed to be Huxley's idea of utopia - a fusion of Western science and Eastern philosophy, as near as I can tell. I'm finding it hard to get into at the moment actually, the main character has been resting in bed for six chapters while characters that I don't care about are thrown at me. Huxley might as well have written this as one of his essays; I dare say I would have received it better.

^ i found it hard to get into at first too, it picks up when he starts travelin around the island. i had to use my imagination with this one a lot more than some of his others, but after a couple reads it became my favorite book.

i am working through this for the next couple days

Just finished reading IQ83 by Arthur Herzog
Image
Found it in the dumpster behind the shop where I work, it was a good read.

Now I'm reading Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott
Image

So far it's good. A little bit of a heavier read because of when it was written, but it's good so far.

just read this last night, i enjoyed it alot.. its an ancient chinese text, and its amazing how true it still rings today.. it has alot to do with the proper attributes a good leader should have, which dates it a little but is still extremely relevant today overall. its translated obviously and not very straight forward so alot of out of the box thinking is required, but it was well done and i felt i understood a good bit of it, i also feel re-reading it alot will open more doors i didnt see the first time

here is an exert i really enjoyed, its a good example of the overall makeup of the text...

66
The reason the river and sea can be regarded as
The rulers of all the valley streams
Is because of their being below them
Therefore they can be their rulers
So if you want to be over
You must speak humbly to them
If you want to lead them
You must place yourself behind them

Thus the sage is positioned above
And the people do not feel oppressed
He is in front and they feel nothing wrong
Therefore they like to push him front and never resent him

Since he does not contend

No one can contend with him

what i'm getting at is that it's good your reading but you shouldn't pretend like you know about leadership because you're reading something that's standard for anyone who wants to throw out platitudes on how to lead

also you shouldn't pretend to be all chummy with the concept of taoism when you talk shit about people for being alone

then i posted a picture of gehlen's memoirs

the book covers sooo much more then leadership, i mentioned only because that was the part to me that seemed to deal most with contemporary issues of the time, other than that it was very individual in nature, i wasnt reading it to learn to be a leader, i was reading it to find parallels in my life and exploit some of the knowledge to help myself... this is my first venture into taoism and i dont claim to understand it in the least... i just figured you completely missed the point of it... but you are again just trying to be internet macho man, or badass, or whatever you want to call it

i realize ive probably done this to you for a good few years, so i apologize, im trying to mature my posts so dp can become a better place for us all...
