is a light needed?

Iv heard some people say they use lights.....Either completely blue l.e.d or regular lights....does it mess them up help them or nothing at all? just beggening just wondering

WOW, This is a pretty old thread here but I had to comment owe it be that I am a mushroom grower myself.

The light IS neccesary. BLUE led is fine also a 15 watt flourescent lightin will do. Mushrooms are not plants true, but they do require light to activate the next process in the growing of mushrooms. Once you have mycelium grown healthy and all. you will introduce your set up to 10-12 hours of Very minimal light per day they say the rule of thumb is if you have enough light to just barley read a book thats enough light for them to activate. Too much light is disruptive but not hugely damaging.. just make sure its not DIRECT light because then the tempurature can raise and if it goes over 85 degress your really pushing its potency to go lower you want to fruit at about 78Degrees and at about 90% humidity. hope this helps

wouldn't that be pretty much like the auxin phototropism mechanism in plants though? because that probably wouldn't require a special set up and wouldn't necessarily induce fruiting. it also doesn't seem like it would make a lot of sense for a mushroom to waste energy to be phototropic

unless there's some other kind of hormone being used?

or are they maybe waiting for some critical night length?

i know that, but that doesn't mean they can't abuse a photochemical pathway. lots of things that aren't plants have some sort of photosensitive mechanism, and it wouldn't be too surprising to find out that fungi would rather fruit somewhere where they're likely to have spores blown around

besides that they've already seen some photosensitive activity happening in things like that. not every light initiated biological reaction network has to be photosynthesis. most aren't

but with magic mushrooms, it doesn't matter at all...

it's not going to increase psilocin production and if it adds size, that's pointless...bigger mushrooms don't mean more drugs...


the only thing I've heard of using light with shrooms is blacking the sides of the tank and having light come in from the top, it makes them grow straighter and increases yield by making the space on the cakes used more efficiently
